Unite For Peace Conference Planning

WHAT IN THE WORLD CAN YOU DO FOR PEACE?  Peace House is sponsoring a conference in the fall of 2007, presenting a theme of UNITE FOR PEACE.  We are looking for committee members to join in the coordination of the myriad of organizational tasks and details to put on the conference.  We are also looking for: sponsors to help with funding/support and workshop presenters.  Please call Peace House @ 482-9625 or email:  jessie@peacehouse.net

    Celebrating Twenty Years of Making a Difference.

    Saturday, June 2

    The teens will perform a retrospective of the company¹s work over the years. Founding director, Carolyn Myers will join current director Cil Stengel and share stories and laughs of the teen theatre¹s rich and beautiful history.

     

    You may remember them as: The Crater Cabaret, Duct Tape Theatre, Ophelia Rising or All the King¹s Men.

     

    Spread the word. Come to the show. There will be cake.

    We need help with coordination and administration, publicity and promotion, speakers and workshops, housing, sponsorship and fund-raising.

    Some Possible Seminar Topics for the Conference (in addition to keynote speakers, music, and literature/organization tables):

    ---How Our Religious Communities Can Work More Effectively for Peace

    ---How Our Schools Can Promote Peace without Being Inappropriately “Political”

    ---How the Media Can More Effectively Communicate on Vital Peace Issues

    ---The Military-Industrial Complex and Our Economic Dependence on War

    ---Non-Violent Conflict Resolution:  Understanding the Path of Gandhi, King, Mandela

    ---How the Perpetual War Culture Affects Children

    ---Understanding Islam and Jihad

    ---Beyond War:  Changing How We Think about War and Peace

    ---War and Injustice:  Better Understanding the Causes of War

    ---The War Culture and Our Civil Liberties:  Understanding the Patriot Act

    ---Groupthink and How It Limits Our Mental Freedom

    ---The Violence Epidemic in Our Country:  Causes and Solutions

    ---War and Literature:  What Our Greatest Writers Can Teach Us

    ---Oil, Water, and Blood:  How Competition for Resources Incites Conflict

    ---Unsolved Questions about September 11th, 2001

    ---Thinking Globally, Acting Locally:  Successful Examples of Effecting Change

     

    There will be a poetry, essay and art component (call for submission to both high school students and community members).

     

    The following were brainstormed by students at SOU with Renee Fisk at the helm;

    3. Mediation workshop.

    4.  Citizen action planning-how do we end the war? 

    5.  Health care-how do we improve it?
