Peace House was founded in 1982 by a
group of citizens who successfully developed Ashland as a nuclear free
zone. An affiliate of the
Fellowship of Reconciliation, Peace House focused on issues of nuclear
proliferation and peace. For
25 years, Peace House has served as a Southern Oregon resource center for
nonviolence, education and action on issues of human and civil rights,
racial justice, environmental defense, economic justice, global
solidarity and peace. Many of
our long-term Peace House supporters and volunteers are celebrated
community elders from whom we seek wisdom and support.
In 2001, Ogden and Marjorie Kellogg of Gold Hill, OR, generously
bequeathed our current residence to joint ownership by South Mountain
Friends (Quaker) Meeting and Peace House, with the condition that both
groups cohabitate in perpetuity.
Our partners in the South Mountain
Friends (Quaker) Meeting began in the mid-1960's when a few families
seeking a deeper understanding of the world and themselves started
meeting in each other's homes. They grew in number and in 1983
settled into the Newman Center in Ashland. Five years later they became a
Monthly Meeting within the North Pacific Yearly Meeting of the Religious
Society of Friends. In July 2000, they moved to our present home at
543 South Mountain Avenue. They were originally called Rogue Valley
Friends Meeting until August 2001.
